Despite generally dismal reviews (read ours here), “Suicide Squad” has smashed box office records, opening to more than $267 million worldwide.
The film made $135.1 million in the US on debut, setting the record for the highest August opening, overtaking “Guardians of the Galaxy’s” $94.3 million.
Overseas, the movie earned $132 million from 57 territories.
One of the most anticipated movies of the year, “Suicide Squad” boasts an all-star cast including Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Karen Fukuhara, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jay Hernandez, Adam Beach, Viola Davis and Jared Leto.
However poor reviews threatened to spoil the party for Warner Bros and DC, the studio having spent $175 million making the film and DC looking to build its own established superhero universe to rival Marvel’s.
But it would seem audiences – particularly younger audiences – have ignored critic reviews and are even taking to the film. Over half of the film’s opening weekend audience were under the age of 25, and 54% were men.
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if audience attendance endures, or if the negative reviews prompt a decline in audience numbers over the coming days and weeks.
