The Brak Show (DVD)

If you disliked the show as much as I did, then the extras will simply irritate you more! It’s large chunks of Brak’s previous outings on Cartoon Network. And, much like the show, the laughs are slim.

Theres a fine between “Funny Absurd” and “Try Hard Funny Absurd”, and sadly, ”The Brak Show” falls into the latter.

It’s much like Nikki Webster, at first it’s new and impressive. “Well, how loveable is this!” you say at first. Then as time goes by, it get’s increasingly more irritating until you snap, finally screaming “F**k Off Nikki!”.

A spin-off of the cult classic Adult [swim] animation benchmark ”Space Ghost: Coast to Coast”, ”The Brak Show” is about as oddball as these shows get. And it works against it for the most part.

Admittedly, theres some hilariously laugh out loud moments packed on to the DVD. More than a few! But not one of them comes from the immenseley irritating lead character. And I’m not simply talking about the ritardation, or that high pitched voice – but just the general sense you get watching it. Something along the lines of “F**k he’s annoying”.

What saves ”The Brak Show” is George Lowes’ take on the ”I Love Lucy” Latino dad. Every single frame which contains the pint-sized father figure is pure comedy gold. The delivery is perfect, the look is superb – and the guy knows how to win a staring contest!

But that’s where the fun ends. Every scene without ‘Dad’ struggles immensley for a laugh (which becomes increasingly apparent further into the series, as Dad gets his screen time sufficiently increased). Even ”Space Ghost”villan Zorak does little to lighten the mood, as the writers delve further into the oddball in desperate hope for a left-of-centre laugh that just isn’t coming.

It’s simply a shadow of the far superior Adult [swim] products on offer.

For die-hard fans only.

Having said that, if you love everything uttered from the screechy voiced Brak, then the inclusion of Commentaries, Deleted Clips and Back Catalouge will keep you entertained for hours on end.
