WB options Dragonriders of Pern series

Warner Bros, the cinematic hub of “Harry Potter”, seemingly hopes to weave box-office magic with another literary adventure series that they’ve optioned.

According to Deadline, “Dragonriders of Pern”, the Anna McCaffrey-written book series (with some 22 volumes), has been optioned by the Burbank bunch. WB exec Drew Crevello brokered the deal, with Julia Spiro also part of the book-to-film production team.

First published in 1968, the “Dragonriders” books tell of a group of warriors – all riding on the backs of giant, fire-breathing dragons – who are out to save their planet from a race of deadly spores.

With “Potter” concluded, and “The Hobbit” winding up this year, Warner’s have been on the lookout for a new fantasy series to fill their soon-to-be vacant slot.
