“Marshall” helmer to direct “Terminator 4”?

Is McG the right guy to be doing a “Terminator” movie”? Hmm, I dunno. Maybe.

I think the problem here is that we still associate the guy with the “Charlies Angels” series – right? No doubt you’re all picturing a femme-bot jiggling about in her Spider-man undies whilst Pink’s new dance remix of the Gunners ‘You Could be Mine’ plays in the background. Then, whammo, door bell rings and the new Terminator, Crispin Glover, asks whether “this be the funky new pad of Julie Connor?”. Fight ensues, camera speed is slowed, and we quick-cut to a couple of high kicks.

But let’s stop and think. McG has done a lot more than those feature-length MTV video clips that we know as “Charlies Angels” and “Charlies Angels: Full Throttle” – and some of them have actually quite productively blended genres. Even though he didn’t direct it, only EPed it, his work on “The OC” proved he’s got savour for character drama. Oh, and of course he directed the football drama “We are Marshall” which was about as far removed from “Charlies Angels” as my family link to Ned Kelly; that had some deep stuff in it. Still, his music-video background and “Angels” work many of us still can’t get past. We might have to though. And I think we can.

According to CHUD, “Terminator 4” could indeed be next on McG’s schedule. Halcyon are chatting to Joseph (that be his real tag) about coming onboard. They want a director quick, ya see, because they’re hoping to put this in front of the cameras before all you Tinseltown types quit wort to hold up ‘pay us more’ banners (because of you guys we’ll all be watching “Baby Geniuses 3” and crappy Renee Zellweger rom-coms come 2009).

I personally think McG, if he can restrain himself from the pop soundtrack and funky visuals we know him for (and we know he can, restrain himself, after “We are Marshall”), could be an OK fit for the movie. Sure beats Brett Ratner, after all. (Now that’s a fuckin scary thought – and one I wouldn’t put past the studio).

The Friday the 13th redo just got realer

Is he the Wong choice, kids?
