Wright for Lifeboat, Reitman for Beekle

Joe Wright (“Pan”) is in talks to direct “The Lifeboat”, based on Charlotte Rogan’s book, for Working Title and Focus Features.

Anne Hathaway is attached to star in and produce the movie, which is being written by William Broyles Jr (“Castaway”).

“Lifeboat” is about a young newlywed-turned-widow standing trial in 1914 for murder. The story recounts how with the help of her new husband she survived the sinking of the Empress, a transatlantic ocean liner. She finds herself on a lifeboat, only to discover there are too many people on board, leading to a moral crisis as to who stays and who has to go.

In other directing news, “Juno” helmer Jason Reitman will write and direct “Beekle”, inspired by Dan Santat’s award-winning children’s book “The Adventures Of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend” for DreamWorks Animation.

“I was book shopping with my daughter, when a little tooth-shaped character in a paper crown stole our hearts,” Reitman said in a statement. “His name was Beekle and I’m honored to now be adapting Santat’s charming story into a feature film. I’m particularly proud to be working with DreamWorks Animation, makers of ‘Kung Fu Panda,’ the first film my daughter ever saw on the big screen.”
