Black Phone star takes lead role in remake of DreamWorks family classic

Actor is hot off Universal & Blumhouse horror pic

Mason Thames, hot off his starring role in Blumhouse & Universal’s The Black Phone, has been cast as Hiccup in DreamWorks Animations’ live-action take on animated classic How to Train Your Dragon.

Dean DeBlois will write and direct the pic, due March 14, 2025, with Thames’ Hiccup teaming with dragon Toothless in what the studio are likely hoping will be the first of several live-action How to Train movies.

Deadline, who have the scoop on Thames, say Nico Parker (“The Last of Us”) has also been added to the cast, playing Astrid.
