Parents, Villain cast in Spider-Man

The cast of this “Spider-Man” reboot just keeps getting better and better – as if to despite us Raimi fans.

Three more actors have joined the cast of director Marc Webb’s “Spider-Man” reboot (shit I hate that word!), according to Heat Vision : Campbell Scott, Julianne Nicholson and Irrfan Khan. The first two thesps will be playing Peter Parker’s parents, whilst Khan will be playing the film’s second villain (alongside Rhys Ifans’ The Lizard).

I love Campbell Scott. He’s terrific. My all-time favourite performance of his is in “The Spanish Prisoner”, a terrific David Mamet thriller about a guy whose taken on a wild ride by a very out-of-character Steve Martin. Just a great film. But he’s also been good in “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”, “Roger Dodger”, “Dead Again” (one of Kenneth Branagh’s most underrated films in my humble opinion) and recently, TV’s “Damages” – in which he proved he can do ‘conniving son-of-a-bitch’ with ease. He’ll be a fine poppa to Peter Parker – in the few brief scenes (assumingly flashbacks) his character will appear in.

Julianne Nicholson is also an actress I really like. I remember her best from “Ally McBeal” but have seen her in a bunch of great indy flicks too – Puccini for Beginners” comes to mind.

“Slumdog Millionaire” star Khan is playing a villain named Van Atter.

Don’t know much about that rogue, so I had to do a Google. And seems there’s a reason I’ve never heard of the character – he’s not in the comics… or so it seemed.

As ComicBookMovie points out, “Users on the SuperHeroHype! boards have done some detective work, and has noticed an interesting tidbit from the comics: A character named Nels Van Adder was the assistant of Dr. Mendell Stromm (who is involved with Norman Osborn and OsCorp) that offered to be a test subject for the two to try out a new chemical developed. This chemical turned him into the Proto-Goblin.”

So Atter is Adder? And Proto-Goblin is the T-600 of the Green Goblin’s? Erm… Okay… I think I’m following.

The trades are also reporting that Annie Parisse (from TVs “Rubicon”) is playing Khan’s on-screen wife.

“Spider-Man”, out 2012, stars Andrew Garfield in the title role.
