Wonder Woman may be joining The Avengers

Now before y’all get all “That can’t happen brudda! One’s DC, One’s Marvel!” let me explain : A few years back, when Joss Whedon was onboard to write and direct a “Wonder Woman” movie for Warner Bros he had apparently scribbled down the name ‘Cobie Smulders’ as a possible Diana. Now we all know what happened to the project, but what of Whedon’s enthusiasm for Smudlers?

Seems Whedon’s still got a thing for her. According to Deadline, the “How I Met Your Mother” star (she plays Robin) is the frontrunner to play SHIELD Agent Maria Hill in Whedon’s “The Avengers”.

In the comics, Hill was the executive director of SHIELD. She would bully and blackmail any of the company’s contracted Superheroes to get her way. She was eventually dumped from the position and replaced with Tony Stark (Iron Man).

Joe Quesada once said of the character: “[Hill] is such a strong personality, she’s like a force of nature and quite frankly, while perhaps not immediately loved by all involved, she’s certainly as strong and imposing a figure as Nick Fury. Right now I feel that people view her as the outsider but [while] I don’t think she’s any harsher than Fury has ever been, what’s different is that we aren’t quite clear about her motives”

Kari Wuhrer (“Hellraiser : Deader”, “Eight Legged Freaks”) voiced Maria Hill in “The Avengers : Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” cartoon.

If Smulders (or ‘Jacoba Francisca Maria “Cobie” Smulders’ as she was named at birth) gets the gig it’ll be a big break for the small screen star whose only other previous film credits include bit parts in the likes of “The Slammin’ Salmon”, “The Long Weekend” and “Walking Tall” (as ‘Beautiful Eye Candy in Car’) with The Rock.

“The Avengers” films in April.
