Abrams goes from Trek to Tower?

J.J leaves Spock for Stephen

Now this is interesting – and I gotta say, damn disappointing.

You’ve probably heard the one about J.J Abrams quitting the new “Star Trek” movie? And, you’ve probably heard the rebuttals, right?

Today, IGN Movies uncovered news that essentially confirms that the first report was correct, as well as revealing what the “Lost” and “Alias” brainchild will be doing instead.

According to the site, Abrams has agreed to direct a film (or TV mini-series; it isn’t exactly sure) based on the Stephen King “Dark Tower” series.

Don’t know it? Never been to Borders? Well, it tells of a chap named Roland (surely Greg Grunberg, right?), the last living member of a knightly order known as gunslingers, who lives in a world that shares technological and social characteristics with the American Old West, as well as bearing magical powers and the relics of a highly advanced, but long vanished, society. Roland’s quest is to find the Dark Tower, a fabled building said to either be, or be located at, the nexus of all universes.

Abrams was originally set to direct the new “Star Trek” prequel film – ya’know, with young Kirk; Spock and Scotty? – for Paramount, but has opted to merely produce the film now. It’s believed Paramount has him lined up to direct another film of theirs, “Cloverfield”, instead.
