A ways back it was net-whispered that temperamental marsupial Christian Bale was eyeing a stint on Lucasfilm’s Han Solo spin-off movie – now officially titled “Solo : A Star Wars Story”. Remember that?
Well, the former Batman has confirmed the report, noting that he did indeed chat to the powers-that-be (I imagine a room full of Ewoks wearing suits) about being a part of the “Star Wars” universe but ultimately passed on their offer to ‘do a take on the bartender Woody from Cheers’ in a spin-off based on Han Solo.
Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Bale – out plugging his new movie “Hostiles” – said he was only a Wookie’s hair away from accepting the role of Solo’s mentor (the part that went to Woody Harrelson) in the film. Yep, that close.
“Yes, [it was] very tempting. I not only love the films going back to my childhood but also have a very long relationship with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall because they did ‘Empire of the Sun’ many years back. There was discussion, [and] I hope there will be future discussions.”
So, yep, Bale won’t be in this one but he might be in a “Star Wars” film in the future – fingers crossed that ‘Bobba Fett’ pic comes to be sooner rather than later. In all seriousness, sign that boy up to something Ms Kennedy!
The actor, who has shied away from tentpoles since he hung up his Bat cape, admitted that although he’s a fan of the “Star Wars” series he isn’t so big on blockbusters or superhero movies, generally speaking.
“I have not [seen Ben Affleck’s Batman]. Yes I’m interested [in seeing it], my son seemed like he was really interested, but then I realized he just wanted to see the trailer and that was it – I tend to go see films that [my kids] want to see. I have to confess I’m not a huge superhero film fan. People seem surprised at that, I don’t know why. I’ve not seen any of the Avengers films or any of those films at all. I hear they’re very good, but I’m quite happy just hearing they’re very good.”
Some of them are, mate. Just some. Your kid has the right idea.
Back to “Solo”, and Lucasfilm has announced that legendary composer John Williams has officially agreed to be the music maestro on the movie. Considering Williams didn’t score “Rogue One”, it’s quite a coup for the film. Ron Howard likely had some sway.
Speaking of Howard, the “Solo” director posted the following on Twitter on New Year’s Day. This is either a ship’s console from the film or his daughter Bryce-Dallas Howard in a wonky dodgem car over the holiday break.
