Bye, Bye Veronica Mars? Update!

Has the CW axed Rob Thomas’s sensational series?

Update : ‘Kristin’ from E Online has chimed in with another update : “You may have seen my earlier report that Veronica Mars has been canceled. Well, let me just say that though I heard this heart-wrenching info in a definitive fashion from six–yes, six–reliable sources on both the network and studio side…that news may have been somewhat misguided. Although this “cancellation” rumor ran rampant around all sectors of Hollywood today, it turns out the picture is more complex than a straight canceled-or-not-canceled scenario. At this hour, here’s what I can tell you: I just heard from Veronica mastermind and showrunner Rob Thomas, who tells me, “If we’re cancelled, I certainly don’t know about it.” Though Rob did not say anything further, inside sources at the CW have explained to me a more detailed version of the situation: According to network insiders, the CW has not officially canceled Veronica Mars. However, they are currently considering a different format for the fourth season. That format would leap four years into the future and focus on Veronica Mars as an FBI agent. The rest of the cast, aside from Kristen Bell, is yet to be determined. So bottom line: Veronica Mars could be: 1) spinning off into a new format, 2) returning in her college years or 3) getting canceled.
And let me just say, number 3 could be a very real possibility, so it is time to rally the troops before it’s too late”.

If I had a web cam, I’d turn it on so you could see the steam coming out of my ears.

It’s truly a sight to behold. It’s so smoky in here that I can no longer see the monitor.

So why am I so huffy-and-puffy? Three words “Veronica. Mars. Axed”.

Look. OK. I knew it was coming. But that doesn’t mean it still wasn’t going to sting when one of “the best shows on television” got cancelled.

I understand why. Yes, it didn’t rate fantastically. But, it did have a loyal fanbase, and it did seem to generate ‘OK’ numbers most weeks. As soon as they decided to put the show on hiatus and replace it with some fuckin’ “Pussycat Dolls” reality show – which is rating by the way!!; go friggin’ figure – I knew it was probably over for Mars Investigations.

Though The CW has yet to confirm it, Kristin at E! Online says its pretty much a done deal. Says Ms Veitch, “The day we’ve all dreaded has come, tubers.

With actual tears in my eyes, I must tell you that I’ve heard from several solid sources that the CW has decided not to bring Veronica Mars back for a fourth season.

Though official word has not yet come down from the network, I did hear from creator Rob Thomas earlier this week, who told me things weren’t looking good: “I’ve never been less certain of our fate. I’m afraid I’ve gone from cautiously optimistic to something less than that.””.

It’s gone. I tell ya. It’s bye-bye. I’m so sad too. This was one of the best written, best performed, most engaging hours on Television. It deserved to live a lot longer than the three seasons it did.

Sure, Kristen Bell can now go and out make movies (“Fanboys”, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”; and so on), but what’s the bet we never see some of these guys again? Its always the way… some of the divine supporting characters… and the actors/actresses behind them…. Will be forever stuck in repeats, living on the residuals of those re-airings. They just weren’t around ‘long enough’ for any big-name studios, or producers, to take notice of them. I hope I’m wrong, though.

I’d love another network to pick up “Veronica Mars”, but I don’t think it’ll happen. The CW remember are the ones that killed “Everwood” – over “Seventh Heaven” – so there doesn’t seem to be a lot of intelligence at play over there. Cut to this time next year, and it – as well as most other networks – will be 24-7 Reality TV-Show programmers. Sad state of affairs when the only shows on TV that people watch – well, besides “Heroes” – are shows where people do… jack shit.

Press Play and Remember the girl….
