Columbus to direct Newman/Redford film

“Walk in the Woods” has its helmer

Heard about this a few days back, but didn’t know how much of a done deal it was. I guess now that The Age is running it, it’s pretty concrete.

Christopher Columbus (“Home Alone”, “Harry Potter”, “Mrs Doubtfire”) is set to direct the big Robert Redford/Paul Newman reunion flick, “A Walk in the Woods”.

Hmm. Don’t quite know what to think of it myself. Columbus? . . . I mean; this is Redford and Newman’s swansong – most likely- and the guy that had Macauley Culkin slapping on aftershave for kicks is behind the wheel?! What went on there?

Redford, 67, would take the role of the author, Bill Bryson, who in the book of the same name attempts to shake off a midlife crisis by hiking across the American wilderness. Newman, 80, would play his doughnut-addicted companion, Bryson’s friend Stephen Katz.

Newman said in an interview a year or so back that he and Redford had been looking for quite some time for a project to do together.

“I hate to talk about anything until the papers are drawn up but we’ve been looking for something like 20 years and now we are looking harder,” said Newman. “I want to make one final film for good luck and I would like it to be with Bob.”

It’ll be great to see the boys sharing the screen together again…. but Columbus?!
