Dwayne Johnson joining the Superman franchise?

Earlier in the week word hit – Reddit – that Dwayne Johnson’s long-gestating “Shazam” film, based on the DC comic property of the same name, had been cancelled. Rather than waste the attachment though, DC and Warner Bros would instead have Johnson play the character of Black Adam – the villain of “Shazam” – in the next “Superman” movie instead. Later, he’d also likely get his own “Black Adam” movie. But Shazam? He’s going to have to keep waiting tables.

Speaking at “The Fate of the Furious” junket, Johnson commented on the rumours, suggesting that nothing is certain yet and there’s still a possibility that “Shazam” could come to fruition. He does hint that there’s a surprise on the way though… money is on a “Man of Steel 2” appearance.

“We’ve had great discussions with Geoff Johns over at DC. This is a really fun, cool time for DC right now because they’re world-building. We’re seeing that with Wonder Woman and Aquaman. We have a few surprises down the line. So what we decided to do was to create a scenario where Black Adam has his stand-alone movie, and Captain Marvel, Shazam, has his stand-alone movie. We’re building our world that way, and then we can come together at some point… We have a surprise for Black Adam coming up. I can’t tell you what it is, but it is gonna be… it’s gonna be f–king awesome.”

“Shazam” and “Man of Steel 2” are both in the development stage and don’t even have tentative release dates yet so there’s still time for anything to change.
