Exclusive Interview : Laura Harring

Talks “Nancy Drew”, “Inland Empire” and “Punisher 2”

Moviehole caught up with the lovely and talented Laura Harring, best known for her role in David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive”, to chat about her latest venture – Warner Bros’ reinvention of the classic, “Nancy Drew”. CLINT MORRIS caught up with the beautiful star stateside.

How did you get involved in ‘Nancy Drew’?
My agent called me and asked me if I was interested in talking to the director Andrew Fleming about it. I’d be playing a pivotal part in the mystery that Nancy Drew unravels. When I heard I was going to have to make pieces of pretend movies for the film, I thought ‘this is every actors dream’! To be able to play so many characters for one film is loads of fun!

What interested you about the role?
The mystery. The old Hollywood glamor.

Had you read the books before?
I had read the books when I was growing up and I was such a fan! I loved both Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. Always reading. I would come home from school and read until I had to go to school. My mom was so proud of me. She bought me a sculpture of a little girl reading. It was sweet.

That’s nice. Tell me about working with Emma Roberts – I hear she’s wonderful?
She’s adorable! It was like looking at an adult in a small body. Simply refreshing and cute! They all were.

It must’ve been a nice change of pace for you to do this – after having done such heavy going stuff as “The Punisher”, TVs “The Shield” and “Inland Empire”?
Yes, filming comedies are fun! I love making funny tv shows, and movies. Every part of filming I love, but there tends to be a lighter vibe around a set when you are filming a comedy.. When I filmed Love in the Time of Cholera, there is a huge theatre scene and we would giggle and giggle after filming the scene, as it was very humorous. I feel very lucky to be able to do what I love and work with such talented and good people such as Andrew Fleming, and Mike Newell.

Speaking of – and I know you’re not going to reveal anything, but I can try – how was the reunion with David Lynch on “Inland Empire”? Can you tell us anything about it?
David is a genius. A soft spoken, wonderful person, with fantastic ideas that just seem to flow from him…

Thomas Jane recently announced he wouldn’t be returning to play ‘The Punisher’ in the sequel. Having worked with him on the original, how did you feel about that?
Thomas Jane is fantastic in the role. I was so lucky [on that film] as well! John Travolta and Thomas Jane -both gifted, wonderful actors. Action films are a blast to film, but are a little bit more difficult, as there is a lot of physical action and one has to be in top shape. Sometimes it’s difficult to get into that kind of shape in a short amount of time. Sometimes also when you have already played a role, you want to move on to another role. That’s why we are actors. Maybe that’s why [he passed], I don’t know. He also has a baby at home, so maybe he just wants to spend more time with the family. Your guess is as good as mine. It is definitely a loss.

Do you have a favourite genre to work in?
I like all genres. I love acting, and pretending to be someone else. I like the magic you feel when you are actually transported to another place. It’s very satisfying.

What’s next for you?
I have three movies I am filming back to back this summer; a wonderful movie about friendship (with a twist of course) and two others. All very different, all wonderful stories and I am grateful to be involved in great storytelling…

Busy bee. Good to talk to you again Laura
