Andy Muschietti is in negotiations to direct New Line’s adaptation of the Stephen King classic “It”.
Cary Fukunaga was previously on board to direct before exiting the project over Memorial Day weekend due to creative differences and budget issues.
Production was supposed to kick off in late June, and at this stage a new start date hasn’t been firmed up. According to THR, when the deal with Muschietti is closed, New Line will begin the search for a writer to work with the new director and tailor the script to his vision. The plan is to still release the film in two parts.
The outlet has also let on that star Will Poulter – set to play the evil clown Pennywise – may also have dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts. But when the new script is complete, they could potentially re-approach him.
Producers are Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg (and Muschietti’s sister and writing partner Barbara Muschietti may now also board the project as producer). Jon Silk is executive producing.
