Justin Lin directing Star Trek 3

Justin Lin has been set to direct “Star Trek 3”, according to Deadline.

The “Fast & Furious” helmer replaces Roberto Orci, who departed his post as captain of the Enterprise’s third mission in the [rebooted incarnation of the] series a couple of weeks ago.

Lin is no stranger to expensive, tentpole franchises having steered the “Fast & Furious” franchise back on track, as well as briefly flirting with “Terminator : Genisys”. In recent times, Lin has been developing a follow-up to “The Bourne Legacy” with Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross front and center. When the latter was postponed, in favour of a Matt Damon/Paul Greengrass ‘Bourne’ reunion, Lin’s diary opened up enough that he was able to squeeze Paramount’s “Trek” threequel in.

Rumours suggest Orci departed the film over creative differences – specifically certain story beats he wasn’t pleased about. Glasses-to-doors say the brass are hellbent on making this next “Trek” closer to “Guardians of the Galaxy” in tone (going so far as to make Scotty’s alien buddy a ‘Rocket Raccoon’ type in this movie). There was also scuttlebutt about William Shatner reprising geriatric Kirk for the flick, but the big guy has dispelled such talk.

Vin Diesel for a Klingon.
