M.Night Shyamlan headed to Twin Peaks! Well, kinda….

I know, I know… we’ve heard it all before. I mean, how many networks have used the “In the tradition of Twin Peaks” line to promote one of their “unique”, small-town mystery series!? God, there’s been heaps (even last week Carlton Cuse admitted his “Bates Motel” is essentially a riff on “Twin Peaks” – or so he believes) … but this one, which M.Night Shyamalan’s involved in, sounds like it’s a cover version of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult masterpiece right down to the title.

“Wayward Pines”.

Hmmm…

“Twin Peaks”… “Wayward Pines”.

The thing fixes on an agent who heads to the kooky town and quickly realizes the town is darn odd.

Cherry Pie may be involved.

Matt Dillon, in his first major TV role, is playing the Agent Cooper part… only he’s named Agent Burke here.

Secret Service agent Ethan Burke arrives in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID, on a mission to find two missing federal agents. But instead of answers, Ethan’s investigation only turns up more questions. What’s wrong with Wayward Pines? Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan further from the life he knew, from the husband and father he was, until he must face the terrifying reality that he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive.

OK, so it sounds like a cross between the “Twin Peaks” series and the “Twin Peaks” movie (in “Fire Walk With Me”, Cooper was investigating the disappearance of Agent Chet Desmond, remember?!).

The thing is based on a spec script by Chad Hodge (“The Playboy Club”) and adapted from the Blake Crouch book.

Shyamalan and Ashwin Rajan (”Devil”) are executive producers on the show, the 10 episodes of which will air on Fox next year.

The script must be half-decent to have attracted Matt Dillon so I’ll hold out hope for this one.
