News Briefs : January 24, 2014

Garett Hedlund (“On the Road”) has been offered the lead role of Captain Hook in the WB’s twist on “Pan”. Should a deal be made, Flynn’s offspring will co-star alongside Hugh Jackman, playing Blackbeard. This one will open against Marvel’s “Ant-Man” in July of next year, so the studio must be reasonably confident they’ve got a goodie on their hands. (Deadline)

If Kevin Smith and Jennifer Garner’s recent comments didn’t already tip you off, Ben Affleck’s Bat-Suit in the upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel will be considerably different to the one Christian Bale wore in the Nolan films. Says Latino Review, “According to the source, the plating is silver/white. The plates are attached to a black undercloth. The plates don’t cover his entire body. We see the black undercloth at the joints. Supposedly, it looks incredible. Equally, or maybe even better-looking than the other suit and it’s leagues above and beyond Bale’s suit from what I’m told.” Considering the mixed reaction to Henry Cavill’s ‘Superman’ costume for “Man of Steel”, when photos of it first surfaced, this’ll be sweet noise to WB’s lobes.

Some new footage from “X-Men : Days of Future Past” has been teased by director Bryan Singer. Assumingly, some bigger, better stuff is just around the corner :

NBC has ordered a new comedy from TV staple Rob Lowe – his last ep of “Parks & Recreation” airs next week – called “Lifesaver”, which “asks the question: How you get rid of the most maddening person in the world after he’s given you a kidney? It’s described as an odd couple comedy in which two polar opposites become inextricably linked.” For Rob’s sake, hopefully it’s decent. (THR)

In not-so-surprising news, the Weinstein Company has removed “Grace of Monaco”, starring Nicole Kidman in the lead role, from their release calendar. The film, which was due to open in March and now remains undated, is caught up in a war between the Weinstein’s and director Olivier Dahan, who doesn’t like the changes the studio has made to the film. This could get nasty. (THR)

Disney has moved “Ant-Man” into “Batman vs. Superman”‘s old slot, July 17, 2015. The superhero film, directed by Edgar Wright, will now face-off against Warner Bros’ “Pan”. “Ant-Man” was previously skedded for July 31, 2015.

Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo won’t be departing Seattle Grace anytime soon; the duo have inked deals to remain on “Grey’s Anatomy” through the 11th and 12th season (THR).

HBO have officially cancelled “Hello Ladies” (the character’s storylines of which will be wrapped up in a ‘special’) and Christopher Guest’s “Family Tree”. Hopefully another sensible network – they do exist, apparently – picks up the latter.

Blockbuster-movie regulars Stanley Tucci, Michael Gambon, and Christopher Eccleston are set to star in the Sky Atlantic drama “Fortitude” (THR)

One-time Wonder Woman Adrianne Palicki will reunite with “Friday Night Lights” showrunner Jason Katims on NBC’s “About a Boy”; the actress will guest-star on the series as ”Dr. Samantha Lake, a love interest for Will, and appear in a seven-episode arc of the comedy exec produced and written by her former FNL boss Katims.” (THR)

Photos from the 200th episode of “How I Met Your Mother” show Rachel Bilson’s character making a return. You still got it, Summer!

Deathlok and Lorelei will appear in future episodes of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D”. Elene Satine plays Lorelei. Meanwhile, the producers have confirmed that J.August Richards’ character Mike Peterson will indeed become ‘Cyborg’. I see they’re doing whatever they can now to get people to watch… (Deadline)

Emma Roberts is joining Sam Worthington in “For the Dogs”, replacing Hailee Steinfeld. (Just Jared Jr)

Yes, they’re completely nuts! Open Road Films, Redrover Co., Ltd., ToonBox Entertainment Ltd., and Gulfstream Pictures has greenlit a sequel to “The Nut Job”, which will open January 15, 2016 (Coming Soon)

Mike Newell (“Harry Potter”) is set to helm a new version of “Day of the Triffids”. “Transformers” producer Don Murphy is listed as being involved, so expect to see damn good-looking flowers. (Deadline)
