“Ben Stiller continues to be a major, multi-talented star because of his discerning ability to embrace creative and innovative projects – whatever the medium,” said HBO’s president of programming Michael Lombardo. “From major blockbuster motion pictures to small independent films; from Broadway to off-Broadway, the common thread is always the excellence of the material. Kevin Smith inks distribution deal

Despite swearing off distributors indefinitely, Kevin Smith has inked a deal with Phase 4 Films that snags the outfit exclusive rights in the U.S. and Canada to exhibit and distribute up to twelve films per year under the newly created “Kevin Smith and SModcast Pictures Presents” label. Phase 4 will release four of these films theatrically each year, which will include a live tour with Kevin Smith, similar to that of Red State, with the remainder of films being released via all other traditional and digital platforms. “I had the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire career touring Red State last year,” said Smith. “Watching the movie with an enthusiastic audience and then doing a longer Q&A than the flick itself, jumping on the tour bus and waking up in another city where we’d do it all over again – it felt less like boring ol’ film exhibition and more like punk rock. We learned (and made) lots touring Red State, so now, SModcast Pictures wants to put that experience to good use for other films and filmmakers on smaller road shows for their flicks. We’ll do four or five cities per film, where I’ll intro the movie and do a Q&A with the filmmakers after the screening. At SModcast Pictures, we aim to be the Island of Misfit Toys for flicks!”

Smith last year failed to sell his film “Red State” to a distributor at Sundance and as such sold the movie to himself for $20. He distributed the film, mostly independently (though with the assistance of Lionsgate), around the globe.

The “Da Vinci” Cast

Tom Riley (“Return to House on Haunted Hill”) has snagged the role of Leonardo Da Vinci in David S.Goyer (“Blade”) and BBC’s new series, said to tell the untold story of the world’s greatest genius. The series will reportedly fix on Da Vinci’s little-known ‘adventurous’ years.

“Given that da Vinci was the model for the ‘Renaissance Man,’ these were incredibly large shoes to fill,” Goyerm quoted by Deadline, said of the search to cast the role. “Leonardo had to be smart, witty, and incredibly confident – without coming across as arrogant. He also had to be tormented, because, as a true visionary and polymath, he was ostracized for his ideas as much as he was celebrated. Tom came in and was able to effortlessly combine all of those elements. As soon as he finished his audition, we knew we’d found our man.”

The film, due to shoot in Russia under the direction of John Moore, will likely announce the winner soon – – meantime, the guessing-game continues.

Rumoured ‘John Jr’ Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”), speaking at Sundance, says thought it’d be strange to “receive the baton” from his “Smashed” co-star (and “Die Hard 4.0” star) Mary Elizabeth Winstead, he’d love to do the fifth “Die Hard”. “I think it’d be great,” the actor tells MTV. “I mean, every one of those movies does so well and they’re always so much fun to watch. Who doesn’t want to run around and shoot machine guns and jump out of helicopters with Bruce Willis?” Paul didn’t say whether or not he was in with a good shot, only that there’s “so many rumours out there”.
