Sofia Coppola headed under the sea for The Little Mermaid

Sofia Coppola (“Marie Antoinette”) is in negotiations to direct a live-action take on Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid” for Universal and Working Title, says Deadline.

Caroline Thompson (“Edward Scissor hands”) is currently on writing duties – inheriting the job from Kelly Marcel and Abi Morgan, who had also tackled drafts – on the tale of Ariel, a young mermaid who falls in love with a human, prompting her decision to give up her fish-tail and move to dry land with her beau.

The movie, which at one stage had “Pride & Prejudice” helmer Joe Wright intrigued enough to consider directing, is expected to move fast.
