Star Wars: The Force Awakens smashes box office records

In some not-so-shocking news (but impressive none-the-less), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has broken box office records both within the US and internationally upon its release.

The film became the first movie to break the $100 million mark in a single day in the US making a whopping $120.5 million on its opening day, including $57 million on Thursday night. (The previous record was held by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” which made $91.9 million).

The film is also on track to break “Jurassic World’s” opening weekend record of $208.8 million.

Internationally, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” broke the biggest single day and biggest opening day records in multiple territories.

UPDATED: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” made $238 million at the US box office to well-and-truly trump “Jurassic World’s” previous record. That said, the dinosaur movie still holds the worldwide record, when it opened to $524.9 million internationally compared to “Star Wars'” $517 million. It’s probably worth noting here that “Jurassic World” made $90 million in China on its opening weekend and “Star Wars” is yet to release in that territory.
