‘The Dude’ joins Iron Man

Jeff Bridges playing a friend of Tony Stark’s

I know you’re with me when I say ‘God, I hope this one doesn’t fall apart’.

Seems every half-decent comic book movie in the works has bitten the dust this week, or rather, the studios involved have replaced the films’ – be it “Wonder Woman” or “The Flash” – capable seasoned captain with a directionless deck-hand that couldn’t find themselves out of a pond.

Jeff Bridges has joined the cast of “Iron-Man’, again confirming that Jon Favreau’s film adaptation of the classic Marvel comic is the biggest star-studded movie to date (well, lets not talk “Superman”). Bridges joins Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Robert Downey Jr, playing the title character, in the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bridges (“Tron”, “The Big Lebowski”, “Arlington Road”) will play a buddy of Tony Stark’s (Downey Jr), who works with him at defense contractor Stark Industries, who plays a major role in shaping the superheroes’ life.

“We’ve been talking to Jeff for [a] long time,” Marvel’s president of production Kevin Feige said. “He’s excited about doing a movie like this, and we’re excited to have him in this particular role. There are many facets to this character which I can’t discuss, but looking at the spectrum of all of Jeff’s roles, this fits in nicely with the man who played ‘Starman,’ ‘Tucker,’ ‘Big Lebowski’ with a little bit ‘Tron’ thrown in. This rounds out our ensemble, and I think it’s one of the strongest casts ever assembled for one of our films.”

Filming on “Iron Man” is scheduled to begin in March in Los Angeles with a planned release date of May 2, 2008.

(Now if only someone could convince Bridges to do that “Tron 2.0”, in which someone has to go into the machine and rescue Flynn – who has gone all Brando-“Apocalypse Now” like – from the guts of the game, he’d be on a real roll!)
