The net may have gotten Mark Wahlberg in Transformers 4

Has the internet just cast Mark Wahlberg in “Transformers 4”?

Maybe.

Sounds like it, anyway.

Rumours were rife a couple of weeks ago that the film’s director had asked Wahlberg, the star of his latest film “Pain & Gain”, to play the hero of the new “Transformers”. But as it turned out, those rumours were wrong. There had been no discussion about Wahlberg battling versatile robots from outer space – seems Bay and Wahlberg were just spotted doing lunch, or something.

But as a result of the rumour, and the feedback that went along with it (namely the positive response to Oscar Nominee Wahlberg potentially being in the film), Bay is said to now be considering the “Ted” star as his lead.

Bay said on his official site :

I squashed a rumor that was on the internet last week. It was about Mark Walhberg. Mark was rumored to be staring in Transformers 4. We are working on another movie together, not T4. I had such a great time working with Mark on Pain and Gain, and he gave such a great performance – well let’s say that very internet chatter gave me some ideas. We are at the inception of our story process right now on T4. Let’s say some ideas are gaining traction with me and my writer – so I’m here to say thanks internet chatter.

Might Wahlberg end up playing the rumoured new human character at the center of “Transformers 4”, a race-car driver that joins his girlfriend in fighting the bad robots? Or maybe he’ll be written in to play a supporting role in the film – much like the one Josh Duhamel played in the previous three “Transformers” movies? Either way, we think he’ll get a gun. Maybe even a big one.

If Wahlberg has indeed been cast in the film based on “internet chatter”, it’s hardly the first time we’ve done a casting agent’s job for them – you’ll recall that Christian Bale was barely on Warner’s radar when the net championed (led by Moviehole, if I recall correctly) him for the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins”.

“Transformers 4” won’t feature any of the cast from the previous films, it’s designed as somewhat of a reboot.
