4K editions of Total Recall, Elephant Man & more announced for 2020

StudioCanal tell us they’ve set a number of classic titles for release in 4K next year, including Paul Verhoeven hits “Total Recall” and Basic Instinct, David Lynch’s “The Elephant Man” and ‘80s cult classic “Flash Gordon”

STUDIOCANAL today confirms details for their 2020 library title release slate, following fantastic results for the studio’s catalogue in 2019, including the international success of APOCALYPSE NOW: FINAL CUT. The breath-taking 4K restoration of Francis Ford Coppola’s classic Vietnam epicwill gross an impressive $1M before the end of the year, released in STUDIOCANAL’s own territories UK, Germany and Australia, as well as in key markets sold by STUDIOCANAL such as Italy, Benelux, Scandinavia, Japan and Brazil.  The film premiered earlier in 2019 at Tribeca Film Festival, as well as receiving its European premiere in front of an enthralled sell-out audience at Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna.

Beyond APOCALYPSE NOW: FINAL CUT, 2019 also saw a wealth of diverse titles restored and re-released by STUDIOCANAL, with festival premieres at TCM Classic Film Festival, Cannes on the Beach, Il Cinema Ritrovato, Biennale di Venezia and Lumiere Film Festival – where 9 of STUDIOCANAL’s titles were screened.  David Lynch’s classic THE ELEPHANT MAN also received its premiere at London Film Festival in October, ahead of its release theatrically and on Home Entertainment in 2020 to celebrate the 40thAnniversary of the film

Since 2017, STUDIOCANAL has ramped up ambitious restoration plans to keep one of the biggest catalogues in the world up to the latest technical standards, restoring 65 films in 2017, 163 films in 2018 and an impressive 217 films in 2019.

Alongside THE ELEPHANT MAN, 2020 will see the re-release of a range of iconic films restored in stunning 4K: Paul Verhoeven’s cult thriller BASIC INSTINCT and his sci-fi must-see TOTAL RECALL ; Jean-Luc Godard’sBREATHLESS, marking the 60thanniversary of the timeless masterpiece; New Hollywood classicSERPICO, released as Al Pacino celebrates his 80th birthday ; and the cult extravaganza FLASH GORDON, as overseen by Mike Hodges.  Rounding out the 2020 slate of key library releases for STUDIOCANAL is the previously announcedIRREVERSIBLE STRAIGHT CUT, which sees Gaspar Noé’s brutal classic edited into chronological order; the film premiered in September at the Biennale di Venezia, with Gaspar Noé, Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel in attendance.

Other library titles which STUDIOCANAL will re-release in 2020 include: THE THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR, THE RED CIRCLE, Fellini’sLO SCEICCO BLANCO and NOTTI DI CABIRIA, THE LADYKILLERS, Moretti’s THE SON’S ROOM and APRILE, and classic Ealing Studios anthology horror film DEAD OF NIGHT, which Martin Scorsese lists as number 5 within his “Scariest Films of All Time” compiled for The Daily Beast.
