About those American Pie 7 rumours

So I see a couple of news wires have picked up my story from a couple of months ago (!) in which we mentioned that Universal were considering relaunching the “American Pie” series on the big screen – rather than keep churning out the direct-to-dvd spin-off films.

Since then, we’ve ran an update, but that seems to have been overlooked – so here it is again, with 20% extra in every juicy pack.

* Universal has abandoned plans to release a new “American Pie” sequel, with original cast members, in theaters. I’ve no idea why – – it might possibly have something to do with the reluctance of those original “Pie” cast members, namely Alyson Hannigan, Sean William Scott and Jason Biggs, who’re doing alright for themselves outside of the franchise. The original plan, we’re told, was to sequelize “American Wedding” but that “just didn’t work out”.

* The next film will again go direct-to-DVD BUT it’ll be in the more vein of the first two “American Pie” films, scribe David H.Steinberg (who worked on “American Pie 2”) tells Moviehole (on a side note, Steinberg also hopes to direct the movie).

* Titled “American Pie : Book of Love” the film will have a link to the first couple of films in that it’s tied to the story of that legendary how-to-bonk book that the guys found in the original movie. You’ll recall the book was passed onto young Kevin by his older brother (Casey Affleck) who explained that, “It originally started as a sex manual, this book that some guys brought back from Amsterdam in the early eighties. What to do with your tongue, things like that. And each year, it got passed on to one East student who was worthy of it.” And those other students, of course, added their own techniques to the book.

* Casting has not begun, but it’s been suggested that some of the original “Pie” gang may still make cameos.

* Tara Reid’s old boobs aren’t doing much these days – so they may be back.

* It is definitely going direct-to-DVD.

I think this one will actually turn out OK – if only because Steinberg is writing it. Not only did he have a hand in writing the second “American Pie” film (which many consider to be the last of the good ones, right?) but he penned a great little comedy that my buddy David Evans directed a couple of years back called “After School Special”. The man knows teen comedy… hopefully he’ll get the series back on track!
