With ’80s throwback “Drive” winning new fans by the day it’s understandable that people are going to be keen to check out more work from it’s director Nicolas Winding Refn. The films that launched the filmmaker’s career are called the “Pusher” trilogy. Being that they were made in Denmark, with the headline acts speaking a language requiring bottom-of-the-screen subtitles, Hollywood’s decided (of course) those films needs remaking in English. By Thor’s hammer the audience doesn’t want to be reading while watching (Nobody seemed to complain when they had to ‘read’ three-quarters of Kevin Costner’s “Dances with Wolves”) do they!? Sarcasm aside, it’s coming. And the remake looks good. Luis Prieto directs the redo, with Refn (who is busy making… well, a bunch of other films with “Drive” star Ryan Gosling) executive producing.
As edgy and explosive as Nicolas Winding Refn’s 1996 cult classic, this English language remake sees a small time London drug dealer descend into debt following a spot of bad luck and a series of bad choices. The more desperate his behavior gets, the more isolated he becomes until there is nothing left standing between him and the nine millimeter bullet his debtors intend to put through his skull…
