Despite dismal reviews, Michael Bay’s latest “Transformers” flick has stood up at the North American box office, enjoying the biggest opening day this year.
“Transformers: Age of Extinction” made $41.6 million on Friday and is now expected to top $100 million on its opening weekend.
If these predictions hold up, the film will become the first to top $100 million on an opening weekend this year, overtaking “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” which drew $95 mil when it opened in April.
Paramount’s robot pic is also raking in the cash overseas, earning $80 million. $30 mil plus came from China, making the fourth “Transformers” pic the highest earning foreign film on opening day in the country’s history.
The film, which faced virtually no competition this weekend, proved that reviews don’t make or break a film. “Age of Extinction” stands as the worst reviewed film of the series, yet is shoe in to top the $97.9 million the last “Transformers” film made on its opening weekend.
Director Michael Bay responded to the negative coverage, making it clear that he isn’t fazed by the reviews.
“They love to hate and I don’t care; let them hate,” he told MTV’s Josh Horowitz. “They’re still going to see the movie! I think it’s good to get a little tension. Very good.”
Clearly the helmer has no need to worry.
Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammer, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Titus Welliver and Stanley Tucci (who brought some much needed comedy to the action flick) star in “Transformers: Age of Extinction”.
