Ashleigh’s got the Toons up for Oscars next year!

The Academy has announced that 19 films have been submitted in the race for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature of 2013.
They are:

“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2”
“The Croods”
“Despicable Me 2”
“Epic”
“Ernest and Celestine”
“The Fake”
“Free Birds“
“Frozen”
“Khumba”
“The Legend of Sarila”
“A Letter to Momo”
“Monsters University”
“O Apóstolo”
“Planes”
“Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie – Rebellion”
“Rio: 2096 A Story of Love and Fury”
“The Smurfs 2”
“Turbo”
“The Wind Rises”

Despite the submissions, several of the films have not yet had their Los Angeles qualifying runs, which are essential if the films are to be eligible for the coveted award.
“Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category’s other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process,” announced the Academy.
Nevertheless, it is unlikely that any of the contenders will fail to meet the requirements.

A host of box-office hits feature in the list, which is rounded out by some lesser known animations. Still, it would be wise not to rule out the more humble features, we’ve seen stranger things happen in these awards shows!

The nominations for the 86th Academy Awards will be announced on Thursday, January 16, 2014, and the event, to be hosted by talk-show queen Ellen DeGeneres, will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2014.
