Best news of the weekend : Tim Burton might be directing Beetlejuice 2

“Beetlejuice 2” is taking longer to come than a drunk Gary Busey at a Buddy Holly impersonator convention, but it is coming… eventually.

Screenwriters Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg have written a script, and now, assumingly, it’s just in the hands of the Warner Bros on-site bank to push it further. Considering how long they’ve made us Mahoney fans wait for the eighth “Police Academy” movie, there’s no guarantee any of us will actually be alive when that cheque is written. But we can hope.

Grahame-Smith and Katzenberg have both said before that a “Beetlejuice” sequel wouldn’t be worth breast stroking through a pool of piss for if it didn’t feature Michael Keaton under the make-up and Tim Burton wasn’t involved. And you gotta agree with that; though the special effects deserve a fat round of applause, it was really the knockout combination of Burton and Keaton that made the movie what it was. A sequel without them would suck worse than an unconscious school slut.

So, we’ve heard previously that Michael Keaton is indeed going to come back and play Beetlejuice, but just what is Burton’s involvement? Is he a producer? is he simply lending his name to it for a bag of cash? Or is his involvement more hands-on?

The Schmoes Know Podcast has the answer.. or they believe they do, anyway.

A “reliable” source has informed the crew that Burton will definitely be directing the sequel to the ’80s hit. Apparently Burton is quite enthused about doing it, and was looking at dropping out of Fox’s ”Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” last week so he could start work on “Beetlejuice 2” instead. Something’s been worked out though, says the Schmoes, that’s made it possible for Burton to do both – and assumingly in the very near future.

Though Winona Ryder has expressed interest in coming back (and Geena Davis even told me once she’d be willing to do it, but the fact that she’s noticeably older now, and is supposed to be playing a ‘ghost’ in the film, mightn’t work), nobody but Keaton would seem to be a ‘must’ for the sequel. As far as we can gather, anyway.

But Burton directing Keaton in a “Beetlejuice 2”? Heck, hold the Catherine O’Hara! That’s enough to punters all juicy in itself!
