Buffy alum scores Oliver! remake

“Buffy” alum turned in-demand screenwriter Danny Strong (“Game Change”, “Recount”, “The Butler”) has been tapped to write Disney’s remake of “Oliver!”.

The musical, which has stage fave Thomas Kail directing, is right up Strong’s alley – he’s a self-confessed “musical theater nerd”, and recently wrote a book based on the Tim Rice/ABBA stage musical “Chess” for it’s run at the Kennedy Center in February. He’s also a very versatile writer, having also written a couple of “Hunger Games” movies, “Rebel in the Rye” (also his directing debut), and for TV’s “Empire”.

The new “Oliver!”, though originally reported to be a new take on the classic “Oliver Twist”, is – according to Deadline – said to be a straight-up remake of the classic 1968 movie. Ice Cube, Marc Platt and Jeff Kwatinetz produce.
