Casting: Hemsworth & Shannon, Johnson, Legend, Campbell

Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon are attached to star in “Horse Soldiers”, from director Nicolai Fuglsig.

The film tells the true story of a U.S. Special Forces team and their untested captain sent to a rugged, mountainous region of Afghanistan in the weeks after 9/11. They were assigned to join forces with a Northern Alliance warlord to fight against overwhelming odds to drive out the Taliban (via Deadline).

Peter Craig and Ted Tally penned the script, which is adapted from Doug Stanton’s book.

“Nashville” actor Keean Johnson has joined James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s graphic novel adaptation “Alita: Battle Angel”.

He will play Hugo, a young man who teaches Alita how to play a gladiator-style game called Motorball but who also has a secret side job stealing robot parts (via THR).

Set in the 26th century, “Alita” centres on a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.

John Legend will play Frederick Douglass on the upcoming season of WGN America’s “Underground”, reports Variety.

He will play the history-making abolitionist as a guest star in the show’s upcoming second season, which will premiere in early 2017.

Legend is also an executive producer on the series.

Naomi Campbell has joined Fox’s musical series “Star” as Rose Spencer, a beautiful and wealthy London-er.

Queen Latifah, Benjamin Bratt, Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady, and Amiyah Scott are also in the cast of the show, while Lenny Kravitz will make a guest appearance.

Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy created and produce the show, with other executive producers including Pamela Oas and Effie Brown.
