DaCosta on Tony Todd’s Candyman role : “He’s the lightning rod”

She’s keeping mum but Nia DaCosta, director of the upcoming “Candyman” reboot, teases that Tony Todd’s involvement in the film will chalk up to be much more than just a thankless, throwaway cameo.

“Obviously, he’s the lightning rod of this whole thing”, the filmmaker tells Australia’s Empire Magazine, “but also something we are protecting at the same time.”

The IMDB listing for the film, which was originally pushed from a June release to a September bow, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, now lists Todd as Daniel Robitaille aka the Candyman of the original trilogy.

The reboot is anchored by “Watchmen” star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who plays “an artist who lives in he neighbourhood”, says DaCosta, “and part of the movie is him figuring out his place as there as a Black gentrifer. His identity is a really cool part of this film.”
