“Desperate Housewives” fans – and there’s a lot of them – will, and should be devastated.
ABC has cancelled the show after its 8th season, which will finish mid-2012.
Creator Marc Cherry has told the Television Critics Association summer press tour he had plot outlines for both a season eight and nine, but it was mutually decided to wrap it up at the end of this coming season:
“I think the only thing harder than creating a hit show is to know when to end it. It’s something that has weighed on my mind for some time. I’m well aware of people who have overstayed their welcome, and I just didn’t want that to happen to us. I wanted to go out while the network still thought it was a viable series and while it still did well in the ratings; I wanted to go out in the classiest way possible.”
ABC entertainment president Paul Lee was glowing in his praise for the series, which has drawn more than 100 million viewers around the world.
“It is an iconic show; we are so proud of it. I just wanted to make sure that the show that put the network on the map had its victory lap and had a chance to build a great final arc.”
What exactly will that final arc be? Cherry hinted it’ll be a return to what made the show great- the mystery surrounding housewife Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong), who killed herself in the first season’s premiere.
