Cannes Film Festival to Open with Woody Allen’s Cafe Society

The Cannes Film Festival has previously featured a strong list of films that have managed to snag the celebrated opening spot. Pixar‘s “Up” and Wes Anderson‘s “Moonrise Kingdom” are among the few that have been chosen over the recent years, but now Woody Allen‘s latest film, “Cafe Society” has been given the honor of opening this year’s festival, according to its organizers. This is the second time Allen has started the festival over the past decade, with the first being 2011’s beloved “Midnight in Paris“.

“Cafe Society” follows a young man who moves to Hollywood hoping to find a place in the movie business. But, as with many of Allen’s works, he falls in love and becomes wrapped up in other wonders and mysteries. The director’s work as of late has not done very well with critics, both “Magic in the Moonlight” and “Irrational Man” have received mixed reviews, although most audiences seemed to disagree.

So it’s hard to tell whether or not this latest venture will score high marks, but getting to open for such a legendary event is quite respectable nevertheless. The film stars a strong cast that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, and Steve Carell, all of whom seem perfect for a film like this. There’s no theatrical release date yet but considering how it fairs after the premiere, more details should become available. The 69th Cannes Film Festival will run from the 11th of May to the 22nd.
