Gyllenhaal to mount for Cross Creek and Walden Media

‘Everest’ has landed Cross Creek and Walden Media as producer-financers, with production set to kick off in January.

The $65 million Working Title film will star Jake Gyllenhaal as Scott Fischer, Josh Brolin as Beck Weathers, Jason Clarke as Rob Hall and John Hawkes as Doug Hansen.

Baltasar Kormakur, who recently brought us ”2 Guns”, will direct the feature.

The film will trace the events of a tragic attempt to scale Mount Everest in 1996. Eight climbers lost their lives when a sudden and extremely severe storm hit the mountain.

Filming is due to begin on January 13 amongst Italy’s picturesque Dolomite Mountains. It will then continue in Nepal and Iceland, reported Deadline.

This film will no doubt be in competition with another studio-backed film of the same title. Doug Liman (Mr & Mrs Smith) is set to direct ‘Everest’ for Sony. Fox has also just secured a 10-part event series about a group of hikers attempting to tackle the iconic Mountain.

Evidently, with the number of Everest-themed productions sky high, it will be interesting to see who climbs their way to the top on this occasion.
