Halloween Returns? Not so much

About that “Halloween” reboot-sequel-watchamacallit that we had the scoop on way back when? No longer happening.

And no, nothing to do with a shambles of a script or an Akkad roadblocking it’s existence because of a lack of back-end points. This is all down to Dimension, who have lost the rights to the “Halloween” series, according to Bloody Disgusting.

Yes, you think they would’ve checked the small print at the bottom of that contract and Fantastic Four-ed that shit out of the thing to prevent such a loss, right?

Marcus Dunstan, of “Saw” (well, the sequels) and “Feast” fame, was tapped to direct the movie – which would’ve served as somewhat of a direct sequel to the original – and was on scripting duties with regular collab Patrick Melton.

Last we heard, Dunstan was keen to cast “Community” lead Gillian Jacobs (Phowar!) in the movie. Assumingly not as Michael Myers.

Miramax, who have the rights, have decided to ditch (their old friend) Dimension and shop the rights to the franchise to other studios. If the rights go to Paramount, that opens up the possibility of a Jason/Michael crossover or if Warner/New Line make a grab for it, we could finally get that Freddy vs. Michael movie.

But this incarnation, with Dunstan/Melton and (potentially) Ms Jacobs, would seem to be off the cards now.

“Halloween Returns” was Dimension’s second attempt to resurrect the franchise, having previously toyed with a concept that Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer were developing – one of which involved the three-dimensional format.
