The Island of Dr. Moreau

Twenty years after his first attempt, filmmaker Richard Stanley might finally shoot his adaptation of H.G Wells’ “The Island of Dr. Moreau”.

Stanley was originally set to direct the 1996 film, starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, but was replaced three days into the production by John Frankenheimer.

The new version has come about thanks to David Gregory, director of the 2014 doco “Lost Souls” about the cursed 1996 film.

Stanley tells Birth.Movies.Death :

“At this stage, I can’t say exactly by who, and how long it will take, but the project does live again, largely thanks to David. We’re currently scripting and designing the thing. It’s going to be an all-new screenplay and an all-new cast of beast-people; the original creatures are copyrighted by Warner Bros. [parent company of New Line, which produced and released the ’96 film]. I wasn’t particularly happy with them anyway.

The final designs of the creatures in the Frankenheimer version were disappointing, and I think there’s huge room for improvement. That’s something I’ve been talking about with the project’s backers at some length because that was also their concern, to reinvent the mousetrap in terms of the beast-people.

This time around, they seem to understand the film a bit better, and realize that the creatures are the stars of the movie, not the humans. That was the essential mistake made in the New Line version. They didn’t realize just how much mileage they could get out of those characters if they actually foregrounded them.”

Interestingly enough, Stanley says the new version will likely take the form of an event series – for TV – as opposed to a large-scale film.

Cult of Chucky

A new image from upcoming DTV sequel “Cult of Chucky” has been released.

The image shows the pint-sized killer doll – complete with manky hand! – threatening a patient with compressed oxygen.

“Cult of Chucky” hits home video October 3.

Hellboy

An unconfirmed source has shared some potential spoilers for the upcoming “Hellboy” reboot with Splash Report.

According to the report, the Neil Marshall-helmed reboot will be much darker than the previous films in the franchise. For starters, “you get to see a lot of cool actions scenes that include severed heads.”

In addition, the film features “creatures of darkness. One creature has giant tentacles which wraps themselves around the London Bridge, hence why the film will be filmed in London.”
