Is Joaquin Phoenix Marvel’s Doctor Strange!?

Last month, the trades let rip with a report that Joaquin Phoenix was in talks to play the Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” movie. We didn’t hear any more of it (plenty of other “Doctor Strange” candidate rumours- like the Jack Huston one of last week – but none concerning Phoenix) but it would seem the deal has been in the works all along.

Collider reported earlier that Phoenix’s deal to lead the movie is currently being finalized.

Phoenix is absolutely still in line to play Doctor Strange in the Marvel adaptation, with our source telling us that his contract is essentially at the 1 yard line, about to pass into the endzone. Though some believed the length of time it’s taken for Phoenix to finalized his deal was a sign that things might have gone south, it makes sense that an actor of Phoenix’s caliber and temperament would want to ensure that his Marvel contract doesn’t restrict his creative freedom to take on other projects outside the MCU.

Other sources, like El Mayimbe from Latino Review, say while they’ve heard Phoenix is still in the mix there’s a long ways to go before he signs on.

And he’s probably spot on there; Phoenix is a fussy chap, and he came pretty close to agreeing to don the bald attire of Lex Luthor in “Batman v Superman” there for a while too – but ultimately copped out, so there’s still a fair chance Strange may go to someone else.. maybe someone even less known. Like Jack Huston.

On the other hand, Phoenix may have already made his mind up to do it.

The star of such movies as “The Master” and “Two Lovers” would, should he agree to don the magician’s cloak, work under the charge of director Scott Derrickson (“Deliver Us From Evil”).
