Jose Padhila has closed his deal to direct the “RoboCop” reboot, the filmmaker tells G1.
Padhila also confirmed his anointment to OCP in an interview with Brazillian videocast MotionTVOnline. They have kindly provided subtitles for the “RoboCop” segment – beginning at 3:20.

As we reported last year, Darren Aronofsky will not be directing MGM’s “RoboCop” reboot.
Following it’s many delays, largely stemming from MGM’s financial troubles at the time, Aronofsky “lost interest in the project” we reported last July. Apparently the film the “Black Swan” helmer planned to make would’ve cost somewhere within the region of $150m and with the lion barely able to make repayments on their office furniture, that was out of the question. Bored of the back-and-forwards, Aronofsky jumped ship to Fox’s “Wolverine” sequel.
So how do you make a “RoboCop” movie as ambitious as the one Aronofsky wanted to do but at half the cost? Well, for starters, you don’t hire Aronofsky to direct.
Deadline reports that Brazilian director Jose Padilha is in talks to direct the film, a remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic. MGM were apparently impressed by some Portuguese-language films that Padilha directed – namely “Elite Squad 2”, a low-budget actioner that went on to make over $60m on home soil.
Oh, and the budget of the new “RoboCop”? Now $80 million.
Gotta say, while I’m curious to see what Padilha comes up with, I aren’t have as intrigued as what I would’ve been had Aronofsky’s “RoboCop” came to fruition.
