Lilo & Stitch gets the live-action treatment

Just as they are most of their other animated hits of yesteryear, Disney is prepping a live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch”.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, naming up-and-comer Mike Van Waes as the scripter, and Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, formerly known as Lin Pictures, as the film’s producers.

Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders directed the animated film, a Hawaii-set story about a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction. Pursuing aliens, social workers and the idea of the bond of a family figure into the proceedings.

The film was followed by several sequels and a television series.

“Lilo & Stitch” joins a number of animated classics getting the live-action treatment at Disney, including ”Dumbo”, ”The Lion King” and ”Aladdin”.
