Nicholas Hoult a final contender for ‘Superman’ role

The actor most recently appeared in ”Renfield”

When that list of candidates for writer-director James Gunn’s Superman Legacy was announced a few weeks back, there were conflicting reports whether Renfield and Warm Bodies star Nicholas Hoult was actually up for the role of the Man of Steel or his adversary Lex Luthor. The weightiest rumor suggested the young actor was the leading contender for Luthor.

Now, however, Deadline says three actors are going in to do camera tests – likely donning that iconic cape with a ‘S’ strapped to their chest – for the role of Superman shortly and Hoult is among them. Interesting. Maybe there was a mix-up and the outlet that previously reported that Hoult, who previously played ‘Beast’ in the X-Men films, was in line to play Lex Luthor got it wrong. Or quite simply, Warner Bros were looking at the in-demand thesp for both parts.

Bradley Cooper was reportedly asked by Gunn to don the bald wig at one stage-  and refused. It’s possibly the Guardians of the Galaxy alum has changed his mind, leaving Warners to shift second choice Hoult into the Superman list instead.

Aside from Hoult, the other two actors said to be testing for Superman are David Corenswet and Tom Brittney. All three are expected to test either Father’s Day weekend or the Monday or Tuesday after.

Meanwhile, Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan and Phoebe Dynevor have been asked to come in and test for Lois Lane.

The roles of Luthor and Jimmy Olsen won’t be cast until after Gunn and the studio settle on their leads, says Deadline.

Superman : Legacy will feature a much younger incarnation of the character – he’ll be in his early ’30s by the looks-  than the one Henry Cavill played in Zack Snyder’s series of films.
