Oprah teams with Ava DuVernay to bring original series to OWN

When you have your own TV network, why not create your own show for it, right?

Well Oprah is doing just that, teaming with her “Selma” filmmaker Ava DuVernay to bring their original drama series to OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.

Based on Natalie Baszile’s novel “Queen Sugar”, the show will follow a spirited woman and her teenage daughter, who leave behind their upscale L.A. lifestyle for an 800-acre Louisiana sugar cane farm the woman inherited from her recently departed father.

DuVernay will write, direct and exec produce the drama with Winfrey set to appear in a recurring role.

Surprisingly (to me, anyway!), the show will mark the first time Winfrey has acted on her network. It will also be DuVernay’s first TV series.

Production will kick off later this year.
