Original Blade stunt performer wants to direct reboot

“Hobbs & Shaw” and “Deadpool 2” director David Leitch says he’d be open to directing Marvel’s recently-announced reboot of “Blade” starring Mahershala Ali.

In the interview with Screen Rant, Leitch confirmed both his interest in the project and noted his history with the comic book character. In 1998, Leitch worked as a stunt performer on the Wesley Snipes version.

“I love Blade. And it’s actually one of the first stunt jobs that I was in, the original Wesley Snipes one. I was a stunt performer in that movie. I was in the blood club. You remember that scene? Yes, dancing around in the recycled special effects blood. It was great.”

While Snipes won’t be reprising Blade for the new film, Leitch believes Mahershala has the goods to be a great Night Walker.

“Mahershala is such a great actor, and I’ve been fortunate to work with some great actors, and I never go wrong that way. Having him play that role is a big deal and would be really exciting. So, yeah, I would love to have that conversation.”

“Hobbs & Shaw” is currently in theaters.
