Pattinson on the Bat-suit : “It feels quite transformative”

Robert Pattinson, recently informed he’d be inheriting the cowl from Ben Affleck for the next couple of “Batman” movies, is headed to Toronto this week where he’ll be supporting the screening of his well-recieved black-and-white thriller “The Lighthouse” at TIFF.

Variety caught up with the Brit actor ahead of the event and managed to get in a few questions about his looming trip to Gotham City.

Pattinson spoke a little on what it was like trying on the bat-suit for “The Batman”.

“It’s maybe the craziest thing I’ve ever done in terms of movie stuff. I put it on. I remember saying to Matt, ‘It does feel quite transformative!’ He was like, ‘I would hope it does!!! You’re literally in the Batsuit.”

(Pattinson is, of course, referring to director Matt Reeves who has the reigns on the tentatively-titled “The Batman”).

“You do feel very powerful immediately, and it’s pretty astonishing, something that is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating. You’ve got five people trying to shove you into something. Once you’ve got it on, it’s like, ‘Yeah I feel strong, I feel tough, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs. You’re trying to think of the way to balance, how to bring something new to it and not want to scare people off, and work in the confines of the costume.”

Pattinson, who recently wrapped Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet”, also touched upon any negative feedback from fans when it was announced he’d be the next to don the cape.

“To be honest, it was less vitriolic than I was expecting. It’s much more fun when you’re an underdog. There’s no expectation of you.”

It was lovely to read that Pattinson use to get about dressing up as Batman when he was a kid – so this is somewhat of a dream role for the versatile thesp.

“When I was a kid, it was the only outfit that I had,” Pattinson says.

“The Batman” is skedded for for a June 2021 release.
