Paul Feig Rips the Pages from Bridget Jones 3 and Exits Project

Something tells me Paul Feig isn’t going to be crying into his pillow tonight  – not when he’s still got all the returns from “Bridesmaids” to count.

Deadline is reporting that Feig has withdrawn from “Bridget Jones 3” after developing the most recent draft of the script, with the intention to direct. Universal Pictures and Working Title Films didn’t feel Feig – an American – directing was the best idea so Feig said peace out.

Feig exited because he and the studios all agreed that they need a British director to direct a British comedy.

Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant will all be returning for the third installment, which begins filming in January.

Meanwhile, Feig has two projects he’s currently working on. An untitled film slated to come out in 2014 which he’ll make for producer Judd Apatow and most likely his Apatow Production, which he hopes Melissa McCarthy (also from “Bridesmaids” fame) will star in, and another film titled “Smooth Operator”.

There’s also talk to a sequel for “Bridesmaids”, but Wiig doesn’t want to come back for a sequel so all that is still up in the air.
