Pirates director to helm latest book-to-movie Micro

Another Michael Crichton novel is getting the big screen treatment, with his 2011 posthumously-published novel “Micro” set to be made into a movie. Deadline reports that Joachim Rønning, who also directed the upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean” flick, is in negotiations with Amblin Entertainment to direct the flick.

Crichton has had a string of his novels made into films and TV productions, with perhaps the most notable being “Jurassic Park”. He has also been heavily involved in screenwriting and production of these projects over the years. The book “Micro” was published 3 years after his passing, after science writer Richard Preston completed the novel based on Crichton’s notes and research.

Frank Marshall is on board to produce the film, alongside Sherri Crichton (Crichton’s wife at the time of his death) and Laurent Bouzereau to be executive producers. Marshall also produced the “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” movies.

“Micro” is a novel that has typical Crichton themes, for those familiar with his work, such as the struggle of humans vs nature, the complexity and controversy around technology and the human struggles to control it. The book also delves into scientific discourse, such as the rich diversity in soil ecosystems and the constant battle humans have to understand the natural world. The plotline follows a group of graduate students that go to work for a biotech company and find themselves cast out into the unknown Hawaiian forests, with only their knowledge of science to help them.

Details of cast, production and release dates are still TBA.
