Raimi has Evil Dead 4 plans

“Evil Dead” director Sam Raimi has long expressed interest in adding another Roman numeral to his cult classic – specifically, with original lead Bruce Campbell front and center. In fact, Raimi mentions the possibility so often that most have started to tune out and put it down to piss and wind.

Though we did get a small-screen reprise from the chainsaw-wielding undead-hunter, Campbell hasn’t reprised the part theatrically since mid ’90s classic “Army of Darkness” – and a betting man would lay big money on never seeing him again in zombie-squashing attire.

With Campbell recently announcing that TV’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead” would be his final hurrah as Ashley ‘Ash’ Williams, an “Evil Dead 4” with Campbell would seem almost impossible to pull off now. Never the less, the “Spider-Man” and “Darkman” director told Reddit readers over the weekend that it’s still his wish to do one more instalment with Campbell.

“Bruce, Rob and I are working with a young fillmaker who is writing a new Evil Dead story that he will direct. As for me…. I would love to direct a new Evil Dead movie… but I’d really like to do it with Bruce. And he says he’s retired the character. I hope not.”

So, from the sounds of it, the “Evil Dead” project that seems to pack the most juice at this stage is the reinvention or reboot or whatever this thing is that the undisclosed “young filmmaker” is writing and directing. It’ll likely be something akin to the Fede Alvarez directed remake from a few years back, which swapped out Bruce Campbell’s Ash for a young, plucky heroine. That was a damn fine film – and welcomingly much scarier than anything else we’ve seen brandishing the “Evil Dead” title in recent years.

Based on how cool Alvarez’s remake was (please do check it out if you haven’t), and as much as I do love Campbell’s Ash, if any of the two ideas comes off, count me in.

Raimi’s latest film, in a producing capacity, is the remake of “The Grudge” – which opened across the US last Friday.
