Russell Crowe may play The Gunslinger in Warner’s The Dark Tower

Javier Bardem is out, and Russell Crowe is in – – should Ron Howard’s ambitious “The Dark Tower” go ahead.

Deadline says the project, which recently changed hands from Universal to Warner Bros, will know whether it’s with or without pulse within the next couple of weeks. Akiva Goldsman has handed in his latest draft of the script, and Crowe has agreed to play gunslinger, Roland Deschain.

While there’s enough appeal there for Warners to gladly open their wallets to financing one “Dark Tower”, remember that Ron Howard wants this to be a nine-volume story to be told over three feature films and two limited TV series. Ambitious? Check! Costly? Check! Check!

Warners will likely base their decision on how much box-office appeal they believe Crowe to currently have coupled with the latest draft of the script.
