Sequel News : Journey 3, Cloverfield 2, Project X 2, Venom,Top Gun 2

“Journey 3”

Director Brad Peyton and writers Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn are reuniting on a sequel to New Line’s “Journey 2 : The Mysterious Island”. “I grew up a fan of Verne, so I know a lot about the mythologies,” says Peyton. “Mysterious Island was one of eight or nine really seminal works. I know we’ve just scratched the surface of what we can do. This one’s going to be a lot bigger. We’re going to go to a completely different world. It’s just going to be a bigger experience, and we’re going to grow the mythology. Journey 2 was about rebooting a franchise; now it’s about making the seminal work in the franchise.” The film will hit cinemas in 2014. (Heat Vision)

“Project X 2”

The Matthew Broderick flick never got this far down the franchise lane. “Project X” scribe Michael Bacall is writing a treatment for a sequel to the surprise comedy hit, with the main cast likely to reprise their roles. (THR)

“Cloverfield 2”

Out stumping his latest pic “Cabin in the Woods”, “Cloverfield” writer Drew Goddard offered an update on a prospective sequel to the 2008 found-footage movie. “I wish I had a better answer (laughs), I wish I had an answer where it’s like, ‘Oh the sequel’s starting shooting at this time next year,’ but the truth is, these things take time.” He adds, “I think if you asked J.J., Matt and I, we each have our own ideas of what we would want to do, which is kind of how the first Cloverfield worked, it was sort of a conversation between the three of us. I’ve certainly thought about it a lot and I think Matt said the same and J.J. said the same, we just haven’t got the three of us together in one room to figure out what we would want to do.” (Collider)

“Top Gun 2”

“Tom Cruise is set to return in the starring role as a test pilot for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter — a plane that could well be the last manned fighter aircraft made in the West.” (MSNBC)

“Venom”

“Chronicle” director Josh Trank is in talks to direct the “Spider-Man” spin-off movie. ”Jacob Estes (“The Details”) wrote a draft of a “Venom” script several years ago, but producers are seeking a new writer, said the source. (The Ross version was to craft Venom as less a villain than an antihero.) The film also would be seeking a new actor; [Topher] Grace is not expected to reprise the role.” (The Los Angeles Times)
