Scarlett Johansson will headline DreamWorks’ “Ghost in the Shell”, according to Variety.
Johansson steps in for Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street”) who pulled out of negotiations when she was offered the role of Harley Quinn in DC/Warner’s “Suicide Squad” movie.
Johansson – whose star has risen as a result of her work in the “Avengers” movies, as well as the recent action hit “Lucy” – will pocket $10m for her work on the Rupert Sanders (“Snow White & The Huntsman”) directed movie.
Based on the classic Japanese anime, “Ghost in the Shell” follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.
Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing the film, written by Bill Wheeler.
